A mother is in trouble because she refused her deployment in Afghanistan. Alexis Hutchinson, a 21 years old who was stationed at Hunter Army base in Savannah. The problem she was facing that there was no one who can look after her 10 month old son. On the 5th of November she was supposed to deploy in Afghanistan but she did not.
Her mother Angelique Hughes said,
“I know she signed up for that, but to me there should be some type of circumstances. I don’t really think they should deploy anybody with an infant child,”
Alexis refused to follow the orders and now she is confined in Hunter Army Airfield and will have to face criminal charges for what she did. Her son Kamani is in California with his Granny.
Well this scenario would not be the same if Alexis’s mother did not refuse to look after Kamani but things went wrong as her deployment time come closer. Hughes said,
“When I got him I didn’t realize it was that serious, it was that hard because he’s a very busy baby, you have to keep an eye on him 24 hours a day,”
Alexis’ mother come up with an excuse that she would not be able to give the proper attention to Kamani so she sent her back to Savannah in the later half of October. As the time of her deployment approaching she had no one near her to take care of Kamani so she had to make a tough decision to chose either her son or job.
She was arrested on November 6th but later she was released but with a condition that she will have to remain on base until the investigation is over.
Alexis’ attorney said,
“Is this a case where the Army is saying choose between your country and your kid? It seems like that is the situation shockingly. A lot of military families are facing deploying,”
On the other hand Fort Stewart said,
“What I can tell you is all of those statements are essentially misleading and not true,”
He added,
“Specialist Hutchinson claimed her family care plan was no longer viable, and that her command was not giving her adequate time to find a new care provider for her child; however, the Army did give her a thirty day extension, and like all soldiers was given plenty of time to work out a better care plan.”
Spokesperson of Hunter Army Airfield Kevin Larson reserved his comments on the charges which Alexis have to face. He said that Alexis will not be sent to Afghanistan until the issue been sort out.
