Bay Bridge Cable Snap

Bay Bridge

Bay Bridge

260,000 vehicles cross over Bay Bridge every day. On Tuesday, authorities had to close the bridge due to a cable snapped on its upper deck. According to reports one person is shaken up by the incident but thankfully no injuries recorded. Peter Van Eckhardt, California Highway Patrol Officer said one vehicle was damaged when the cable snapped. Falling piece hit three cars but no injuries happened.
At the busy part of the day 3 feet long damage part of cable fell onto the westbound lanes of the bridge at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
At 8p.m the eastbound road was closed for traffic and the westbound road closed later after this. The damage occurred at the same place where a big tuck crashed and over turned earlier this month. The 73-year-old San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was closed over the Labor Day weekend for repair. It was part of a seismic upgrade and had to be completed 150 feet above the ground.
Tony Anziano, Caltrans toll bridge program manager said

“It’s way too early to say, we have to take a careful look at it.”

Bart Ney, a Caltrans spokesman said

“We’re dealing with some high winds, and it’s dark out there, we want to be as safe and as thorough as possible.”
