A significant crack was found in the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge during a scheduled construction job. According to CalTrans spokesman Bart Ney, a team of workers has been assigned for this job and the material they needed to repair the crack was also provided.
On Friday, it was for the first time that the bridge was closed on a workday. Previously, this bridge required repairing when a part of it collapsed in a devastating 1989 earthquake. Ney said the bridge remains close until it repaired completely. It was also reported that the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge had scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Tuesday. CalTrans spokesman Bart Ney said.
“People should be braced for another day of it being closed,”
Ney said,
“A 2 inch thick steel link that is part of eight like pieces was found cracked halfway through.”
At a news conference, Bart Ney of Caltrans said.
“We have to make this repair before we reopen the bridge. The crack is significant enough to have closed the bridge on its own,”
In 2007, the bridge was last inspected and at that time no crack was located. It means the crack appeared after that. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge carries approximately 260,000 vehicles daily and its structure is really huge. It was reported that on Sunday, workers were seen waiting for the material the required to repair the bridge.
