Romell Wilburn, 33, is arrested by the officials on Monday after three packets of tobacco laced with marijuana found from him. He was trying to smuggle marijuana to inmates. According to Andy Conklin, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman, he is arrested under the charges of smuggling drugs.
“He made arrangements between inmates and people on the outside to smuggle in tobacco laced with marijuana,” Conklin said, citing court records.
Wilburn was assigned in division 10 that is the most security portion of the jail with psychiatric inmates, Steve Patterson, Cook County Sheriff’s Dept Spokesman said. The department searched whole division after arresting Wilburn but found nothing.
Department began investigating Wilburn after they received a tip from internal investigation units that Wilburn was bringing drugs to the jail while on duty. They got information from their surveillance camera who recorded Wilburn going to his car and picking drug packets. The authorities arrested him when he tried to re-enter.
Investigators are trying to determine who was paying him for drugs.
On Wednesday, Wilburn appeared in court and according to Conklin bond was set at $25000. His preliminary hearing will be started on 9th December at indictment Court.
Authorities are also searching other suspects involved with him.
