In 32nd annual Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon, thousands of runners participated in Detroit streets to race in temperature of around 30 degrees in the morning. Overall, it turned out to be a wonderful day for all the thousands of people. But the disappointment thing was that when three died during the event. Most of the runners, which include hand cyclists and wheelchair athletes, were unaware of the tragedy that took place after they finished the race in triumph. In this 32nd annual Detroit Marathon, a record registration of 19,326 runners participated for one of the world’s largest races.
For some participants, this is the first their first attempt to run the 26.2 mile course. It was their choice to participate in relays, half-marathon and a 5k run or walk. The race includes crossing the tunnel beneath the Detroit River, into Windsor, Ontario and back. During the event, parties had been organized along the route by the resident’s neighborhoods. But the event marred as three deaths really disappointed the festivities. At the 11th-mile marker, about 9:02a.m., the authorities identified the man collapsed at there. Fifteen minutes later, not far away, another man collapsed. Then, at 9:18, a third man death was identified by the officials. The three runners who died during the marathon were ranged in age from 26 to 65. Deaths at marathons are relatively rare. The last death at the Detroit marathon was in 1994 when a 42-years old man died near the 21st-mile marker of a heart attack.
Officials say all three men died of heart attacks. According to the Medical official’s reports, they were investigating. But the vice president for the Detroit Media and one of the marathon’s sponsors, Rich Harshbarger said,
“Weather was the main factor, is speculation. There is no way to know.”
Thus, several other races have been marred in recent years due to hot weather conditions.
