The New York Yankees have reportedly signed outfielder Marcus Thames to a Minor League deal. Thames base salary will be $900,000 with incentives if he makes the 25-man roster. Thames will compete with Randy Winn and Brett Gardner for playing time. Thames played the past six seasons with the Detroit Tigers. He averaged 20.5 homers per season over his last four years with the Tigers.
Thames hit .252 with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs in 87 games with Detroit last year. In 522 career games for the Yankees, Rangers and Tigers, Thames has a .243 batting average, 101 homers and 261 RBI. Thames was originally selected by the Yankees in the 1996 draft and appeared in seven games for the Bronx Bombers during the 2002 season.
