Marie Hilley?s parents were Huey and Lucille Frazier. Marie Hilley married in May 1951 to Frank Hilley. In 1975 Frank Hilley was found to have a viral stomachache, he was admitted in the hospital for further tests and to keep under observation and faced a kidney malfunction. He was also diagnosed with infectious hepatitis and passed away on the morning of 25th May 1975.
Frank had an average insurance policy which stated that Marie Hilley would get $31,140. After three years she used $25,000 on an insurance policy for her daughter, Carol.
Few months after, Carol started feeling nausea and had been in the emergency room numerous numbers of times. One year after Marie Hilley gave an injection to Carol that she claimed would lessen the nausea Carol was having. But that did not seem to happen; the symptoms still existed and gradually got worse.
A month after Carol was admitted, she was found to be suffering with malnutrition and deficiency of vitamins. The physician also added that he suspects heavy metal poisoning being the reason for all these symptoms.
After some time, physicians found Aldrich-Mees lines in Carol?s fingernails and toenails which proved arsenic poisoning. Everyone got suspicious and exhumed Frank?s body and also found that high level of arsenic was present in him as well, which was given to him over time prior to his death and became the cause of death.
Marie Hilley was arrested for the attempted murder of her daughter on 9th October 1979.
