Ring Around the Moon

Rings Around the Moon

Rings Around the Moon

Sometimes we see rings around the moon and like a rainbow it can be slightly colored, red on inside and blue on outside. Its called “Lunar Halo”. What do you think what is it? It can be an optical illusion or the refraction of moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. These crystals have the same shape, namely as hexagonal shape. The ring around the moon always have the same shape and size 22-degrees across the sky and the rings may be produced by different angles in the crystals.

According to Moon Ring Weather Folklore,  this ring signifies bad weather is coming. Sometimes its proved true but the question is how rings around the moon be a predictor of coming weather? Some people believe that the numbers of rings predict that how many days are left in bad weather coming.

Moon produces different intresting optical effects. In which moon rings, moon dogs, moon pillrs are common. The rings around the moon arises from the light passing through six sides of crystals. Then these crystals refract the light in the same manner as camera lense do. Such Lunar Haloes are much safer than solar haloes. They can be noticed simply because of lack of glare.
