An American Physician with an amazing ER experience who worked for a year at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station as the only doctor in 1998, passed away on June 23 2009.

Dr. Jerri Lin Nielsen when worked at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station was completely cut off from the whole world during the southern winter. She developed a horrifying condition which was breast cancer. So Dr. Jerri Lin Nielsen in a telephone conference with the medical unit in United States of America had to go through a self operation procedure in order to take some tissue samples to run some tests. Later on a military plane was sent to the pole to drop off some equipment and medication for Dr. Jerri Lin Nielsen. However her situation was life threatening so the plane that was supposed to be there during the spring was sent many weeks earlier than usual, ignoring the weather conditions, as it was much more important to get Dr. Jerri Lin Nielsen to U.S.A as soon as possible. Dr. Jerri Lin Nielsen?s situation grabbed the attention of the media and later on she wrote an autobiography in a book which retold her story.

Her cancer was diagnosed but returned in 2005 and speeded faster in her liver and bones. But Dr. Jerri Lin Nielsen carried on with her life and traveled more and more to countries like Vietnam, Ireland, Australia, Hong Kong, Alaska, Poland, and she also frequently used to go back to Antarctica. In October 2008 Dr. Jerri Lin Nielsen publicly announced that her cancer has now taken a shape of a brain tumor. She died on 23rd June 2009 at an age of 57 in her hometown Southwick of Massachusetts.
