Indeed it was a remarkable day for the Pakistanis around the world as the Pakistani Cricket Team won their first major title after 17 years. They shocked the world when they defeated the Sri Lankan team by eight wickets and won the T20 World Cup 2009.
The match was held at a full packed Lord?s stadium on Sunday. Sri Lanka had won the toss and had elected to bat first. Fast bowler Abdul Razzaq achieved 3 very important wickets as the whole team together fielded remarkably to narrow down and restrict the Sri Lankan total to a 138-6. Shahid Afridi played an outstanding inning scoring 54 from 40 deliveries; this was his second consecutive fifty. He was assisted with the former captain Shoaib Malik who scored 24 not out making a match winning partnership of 76 with the loss of only 3 wickets. Shahid Afridi faced the winning shot for a single and cheered his way to the pavilion.
This was an amazing achievement for the Pakistani team as last they won a major title was back in 1992 when lead by Imran Khan and they had won the World Cup by defeating England at Melbourne in the final match.
Throughout the final inning it showed that Pakistan is playing some intelligent cricket as they were playing quite defensive rather than going after each ball for a boundary. Sri Lankan team with the help of the captain Kumar Sangakkara was able to put up a respectable total on the board for Pakistan to chase, as the amazing Pakistani bowling had thrashed the opening and middle batting order of Sri Lanka.
Shahid Afridi was announced the Man Of The Match for his amazing match winning knock, and the batsman of the tournament was Tillakaratne Dilshan.
