Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is a psychiatric facility in Weston, West Virginia. It was a hospital for psychiatric patients and named Weston Hospital but the Weston Hospital was closed in 1994 and now ghosts roam the grounds. It is said that Ghosts Adventure’s team will spend whole 7 hours in Lunatic Asylum to find any evidence of paranormal activities on this Halloween.
The most important thing of Lunatic Asylum is its massive size which strikes most visitors. It is consisted on 9 acres with 4 floors that is apprx. 1296 feet long and contains 906 doors and 921 windows, it was constructed between 1858 and 1881.it is the larrgest hand-cut stone masonry in North America and also the world’s second largest stone-cut masonry building after Kremlin. It is nestled in the great green Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia.
Renowned architect Richard Snowden Andrews designed the asylum in accordance of Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride’s Linear or Moral Treatment Plan for psychiatric patients. It was such arranged that each structure would be able to receive therapeutic sunlight and fresh air.
The German and Irish stone masons carved beautiful arches, moldings, window trims, flowers and Celtic details on the blue sandstones. Its most striking features are its 200 foot central clock and welcoming fountain just beyond the front entrance.

What an imposing example of psychiatric hospital architechture. There is something about the way these buildings look that suggest something about how the patients were regarded. I live in Upper Saxondale the UK the former Nottinghamshire Lunatic asylum whose buildings were taken over by a home developer. I’m not sure if we have ghosts but there is a ’sense’ around the place I have to admit. Doing tours is a good idea I think because it brings the important subject of mental health into main stream awareness
